In these days, research and information seeking is commonly done over the Internet. If you wish to find out about some thing, all you have to do is enter the keywords on the search bar, click the button next to it, and a listing of relevant sites that have data attached to your search appears on your screen.

Websites that allow you to do the looking are called search-engines. Major search engines today contain Google, Yahoo!, Live Search by Askcom (formerly AskJeeves), Microsoft (formerly MSN), and AOL.

How do these sites search up the web for the information you'll need? The process is complex but could be explained in simple words calculating relevancy, indexing, control, running, and locating.

Firstly, search engines search or crawl the internet to determine what type of information can be obtained. Running is performed by the software called crawler or index. The crawler follows links from page to page and then they index what-ever information they run into. In case a site or link is crawled and found to be appropriate, it's then marked or indexed by the crawler and then stored in to a huge database so it can be recovered later. Indexing requires pinpointing words and expressions that most useful describe the page and then setting it to specific keywords.

The request for information is then processed, whenever a web surfer works a search. Control is the comparison of strings in the search request with the pages in the database. For example, if you key in the word Internet about the search bar, the search engine runs through its database for listed pages which contain the word Internet. Link is a prodound library for supplementary information concerning the inner workings of this viewpoint.

The engine would then calculate the importance of the pages in its index to the search string or the word, as it is most likely that many pages would include the word Internet. Following the search continues to be processed, effects may now be gathered by presenting them in the browser or the countless pages that appear o-n your screen that includes lists of appropriate web sites you may visit.

There may be times when you perform a search over the Internet and the results you get aren't that relevant or the relevant sites are on the bottom level of the list. This is because sometimes there are internet sites that contain useful information but are not search engine friendly. Meaning, the internet sites style or pat-tern isn't that easily recognizable by search engines. Cases like this may be annoying to the internet site owner and both information seeker.

This really is where SEO will come in. Search engine optimization is all about making websites more available to search engines to higher show results and effectively rank them in terms of importance to your search topic. What SEO does is that's tailors a websites design or structure to the pat-tern that could be easily found and prepared by search-engines. This may be done by increasing your website information, selecting a proper domain-name, putting keywords, text style, central linking, etc.

Search engines are always seeking ways on improving their technology to be able to get the web deeply and provide appropriate results to users.
